Problem number 12. A cat and a bowl of milk are in opposite corners of the board. The cat can only move as shown by the arrows. In how many ways can the cat reach the milk? A, 2, B, 3, C, 4, D, 5, E, 6. The cat moves one square at a time and the arrows show us that he can only move to the right or down. To reach the milk, the cat will have to make it across two columns and down two rows. This problem is asking us how many different combinations there are for the moves to the right and the moves down. We can start by moving the cat two to the right and then he has to make the two moves down right after that. So that's our first option. Secondly, we can start with going to the right, then go down, and at this point we have two more options. Either go to the right again and then down, or going down and then to the right. So those are two options. If we go down first, we can go down, down, right, right, which gives us one more option. Or we can go down, right, and again we have two options. Either down and then right, then right and then down, which gives us another two options. So there was one option to do two right moves first and then go down. We had two options if we started with a move to the right and a move down. That's one, that's two. There's only one option if we make the two down moves first. And if we move down and then to the right, we have two options. Again, either right and then down, or first down and then right. So 1 plus 2 plus 2 plus 1 is 6. Since we have six choices, the correct answer is E.
Video Summary
The problem involves a cat on a board needing to move from one corner to a bowl of milk at the opposite corner, following a restricted path of only moving right or down. The cat must traverse two columns to the right and two rows down. The task is to find the number of possible move combinations to reach the milk. Considering all alternate sequences of these moves, there are six possible combinations (e.g., R-R-D-D, R-D-R-D, etc.). Therefore, the total number of ways the cat can reach the milk is 6, corresponding to answer E.
