Problem number 21. There are some apples and 8 pears in a basket. Each of them is either green or yellow. There are 3 more apples and a total number of green fruits. There are 6 yellow pears. How many yellow apples are there in the basket? A4, B5, C6, B7, E8. When you're not sure how to go about solving a problem, start with what you know. Here, we are told that there are 6 yellow pears. We also know that there are 8 pears in the basket. There have to be 2 more pears, which are green, to make 8 pears. The problem is asking us about how many yellow apples there are. We know that there are 3 more apples than the number of green fruits. So far, we have 2 pieces of green fruit. So we would have 3 plus 2 apples. And they would have to all be yellow, because otherwise we would end up with more green fruit. So we can draw in the 5 yellow apples. So if we only have the 8 pears and just 5 apples, all apples are yellow. Now notice what happens if there are any green apples in the basket. If we have 1 green apple, then the number of green fruit is 1, 2, 3. And the total number of apples should be 6. Well, it is, because we have 5 yellow apples and 1 green apple. If we add 1 more green apple, we have 4 green fruits and 7 apples total, but still 5 yellow apples. If we had 5 green apples, we would have 7 pieces of green fruit, a total of 10 apples, which is 7 plus 3, and it's still just 5 yellow apples. So even though we don't know how many apples total we have, because we don't know how many green apples we have, we know that there are 5 yellow apples. So the answer is B, 5.
