So we're going to count every square on the piece of grid paper, and then we're going to subtract four because the four corners do not have ink on them.  Now we are going to count the squares.  One, two, three, four, five, six,  seven, eight, nine, 10, 11,  12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.  21, 22, 23, and 24.  24 minus four is 20,  which means there are 20 squares covered with ink, which means our answer is E, 20.
