To solve this problem, I suggest we trace the route that Stephen drives. Remember, every time there's a crossing, he stops. So basically, we're counting how many times he goes through a crossing. Starting here, Steve will go through here. That's 1. Here, 2. 3. He'll loop around and go through the same crossing again. So that's 4. Here he goes through, 5. And again through the same one, 6. Then he loops around through this one. 7. Goes here. 8. 9. 10. Keeps going. 11. 12. 13. 14. And he gets to Y. So we counted 14 stops. Also, if we mark our paper, we can see that he goes through each of these crossings exactly twice. So we can check our work. There are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 crossings. He stops at each one 2 times. 7 times 2 is 14. The answer is D, 14.
