Problem number 16. Max wants to complete the puzzle shown. He has five different pieces as shown. Which pieces does he have to use to complete the puzzle? We could try going through and laying the pieces on top of the puzzle and figuring it out that way. Another way that we can do it is to count how many small squares we need to cover, and that might eliminate some of the choices because the number of the white squares here needs to be exactly the same as the number of the total squares in the three pieces that are chosen. So let's start counting. There are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. 10 small white squares that need to be covered. Now let's count the number of squares that each choice gives us. In choice A, we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. 10 squares, so that will be a choice to try. In B, we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. 11 small squares, so we already know this will not work because the pieces would take up too much room and we can't have overlap. In C, there are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. 11 small squares, again, that's not going to work. In D, there are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. 7 small squares, which is too few. We won't be able to cover up all the white. And in E, there is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 small squares, which again is too few. So we see that A is the only option that could work. Let's just make sure that we can somehow fit these pieces in there. We can put the first piece here, the long piece here, and the last piece fits perfectly right here. So choice A is the answer.
