Problem number nine. A student has four blocks as shown. Which of the following shapes cannot be made using these four blocks? Here are the four blocks a  little bigger and in different colors. Let's try building the shape starting with shape A. We need to make a couple of blocks vertical and then we can build  the shape. So A works. Here is shape B. I'll keep the vertical blocks and we've built it. For shape C we can have one block vertically and we can build the  figure. Let's try making shape D. We will start with one of the blocks being vertical. And this doesn't work because we have no way to put that pink block  in. So I'm going to flip some of these cubes and try again. Again we have no way to place the fourth block. I'm going to try it again starting with the cubes as  they were and maybe build it this way. But again we have no way to place our last cube. I'm going to move on to the last figure. If we can make that one then  D will be the one that we cannot make and we'll know that D really is something that cannot be built using these blocks. So here's figure E and we  can build it, for example keeping one of the blocks vertical. So the only one we could not find a way to build was D. And since we were able to make all of the  other shapes, we know that D is going to be the right answer.
