Problem number 17. Katie has a clear box containing six small cubes. What does Katie see if she looks at the box from above? Let's draw a grid to help us think through the view from the top. We will see all the blocks in their rows and columns. The grid on the bottom of the figure helps us. First, there is the one cube in the back on the right. Then, the tall column in the back on the left will also be seen in that row. This is the block of the hole in it. There are two blocks touching this block at the top of the box. One is in front and the other on the right. Notice that there are no cubes in the front part of the box. There is a gap between the cube in front of the cube of the hole and the front face of the box. So, this square in the grid will be empty. The whole front row needs to be empty. This is the view from the top and we have found that it matches answer E.
