The picture shows the plan of a rose bed. White roses grow in the two equal squares, and red roses grow in the third square. Yellow roses grow in the right triangle. Both the length and the width of the bed are 16 meters. What's the area of the rose bed? So here's the diagram a little bit bigger. So let's cut up this region into things that we can find the area of a lot easier. So let's cut up these squares into these two triangles, into triangles like this, and let's cut up this guy into triangles as well. And now we see that we have the same triangle copied nine times. So if we find the area of this one triangle here, then we just multiply it by nine and get the area of the entire thing. So we know that this length right here is 16. So that means this one length right here is 8. So that's the diagonal of this square. Well, we know that the area of the square is half the product of the diagonals. So the area of this square is 32, which means that the area of this triangle is half of that, which is 16. Well, now we have nine of those in total, so the total area is 144 meters squared.
