How many real solutions does the equation x minus 2 quantity squared plus x plus 2 quantity squared equals 0 have?  Since we want real solutions, we know that x minus 2 squared is greater than or equal to 0, and x plus 2 squared is greater than or equal to 0 as well.  But since they add up to 0, we know that x minus 2 has to be equal to 0, and x plus 2 has to be equal to 0, which means that x equals 2 and minus 2 at the same time, which  is impossible, so there are no solutions.
