A certain team played 38 games and gained 80 points. Find the greatest possible number of games that the team lost.  In order to find the greatest number of losses, we must find the greatest number of wins because that way we will get closest to 80 points with the fewest games.  So the winner gets 3 points for each win, and we need to find a multiple of 3 closest to 80 in order to find out how many wins they got.  So they will have 26 wins because 26 times 3 is 78. So that is the closest we can get to 80 without going over it, which gets us to 78 points,  which means we still need 2 points in order to get to 80. So they get 1 point for each tie, which means there must be 2 ties.  Which means in total of 26 wins and 2 ties, there are 28 games so far. But since they played 38, that means that they have 10 losses. Which means our answer is C, 10.
