Problem number 17. Eva has the five stickers shown. Triangle, circle, star, flower, and apple. She placed each of them on the five squares of this board. One on each square, so that the star is not on square five, the apple is on square one, and the flower is next to the circle and triangle. On which square did Eva place the flower? A, 1, B, 2, C, 3, D, 4, or E, 5. We need to start with what we know. The apple is on square one, so it's right here, so that square is taken up. Then, we know that the flower is next to the circle and the triangle. The only way that will work is if the flower is between the circle and the triangle, because they're in a line on the board. Now, we could have the triangle first, then the flower and the circle, but no matter what, this will take up three spaces, and the flower will be in the middle of them. Space one is already taken up, so we could put these three stickers on these three squares, but then we would have to put the star on square five, and we know that this is not the case, so this setup is not going to work. The only other option is to put these three items on the last three squares, three, four, and five, and no matter whether the circle or the triangle is first, the flower will be in the middle of them on square four, so the answer is D, four.
