Problem number four. Alice has these puzzle pieces. Which two pieces can she put together to form this square? This problem lays out the puzzle pieces on a grid. You can see these dots, so if we were to connect them, form a grid. And you can also see these dots marked on the square. Here's a close-up of the square, and we can connect those dots to give us an area of the square. What I'm going to do to solve this problem is I'm going to figure out the area of this square by counting the little squares in the grid, and then compare that to the areas of the puzzle pieces. This might be an easy way to solve the problem, if we can figure out that only certain pieces would fit together to give the right area. So in this square, we have four rows and four columns, or 4 times 4, or 16 small squares. Now we can also draw the grid on the puzzle pieces. Looking at the first puzzle piece, we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9 small squares. In the second one, we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8 small squares. In the third piece, we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10 small squares. And in the last piece, we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 small squares. We need a total of 16 small squares in order to fit the pieces together well, and we can only do this with pieces 1 and 4. So let's just make sure this works. Here's piece 1, and we see that here piece 4 will fit perfectly. So we know that our answer is pieces 1 and 4, which is letter choice C.
