Question 14. Lucas wants to make a caterpillar that has a head, a tail, and one, two, or three puzzle pieces in between. How many different caterpillars can Lucas make without flipping the pieces over? First, let's start off with the fact that each caterpillar will have a head and a tail. Now let's try to make the simplest caterpillar. We can do this by putting in the cherry piece, just one piece. The next caterpillar, again, start off with the head and the tail. And we'll use the cherry piece again, but this time we'll add on the apple piece. Next, we'll make one with the grapes and the cherry piece. And finally, we'll have a grape, cherry, and apple piece. We have used all of our pieces in different ways, with no other ways to reposition them, since they would not fit in any other configuration. So our answer will end up being B, four.
Video Summary
Lucas can create four different caterpillars with a head, a tail, and 1-3 puzzle pieces in between, without flipping the pieces. The combinations are: one cherry piece, cherry and apple pieces, grapes and cherry pieces, and finally, grape, cherry, and apple pieces. Thus, the answer is four different caterpillars.
