Question 23. Three girls, one after another, take some cookies from the tray shown. One of the girls takes all the heart-shaped cookies available on the tray. Another girl takes all the white cookies available on the tray. Another girl takes all the large cookies available on the tray. However, they do not necessarily take the cookies in this order. One girl takes three cookies, one girl takes six cookies, and one takes seven cookies. Which of the following sets of cookies does one of the girls take? Start off by drawing our cookies. We know that the girls take seven, six, and three cookies. So let's start figuring out which cookies were taken in what order. We know that one of the girls takes all the heart-shaped cookies. We notice that there are eleven heart-shaped cookies. That is not one of our three numbers. So she cannot be the first girl to take cookies. So instead, let's start off with the girl who takes all the white cookies. Because there are, in fact, seven white cookies. So she has taken her cookies. That leaves the girl who takes all the heart-shaped cookies. And that would mean she took all the rest of the cookies, which would be nine. Which is not one of the numbers. Alternatively, if it's the girl who takes all the large cookies, she would take four cookies. Again, not one of the numbers available. So that means that the girl who took all the white cookies cannot be the first one. That leaves the girl who takes all the large cookies. She has to be first. So she takes seven large cookies. And this leaves us with the girl who takes all the heart-shaped cookies, and the girl who takes all the white cookies. If it was the girl who took all the white cookies next, she would take four cookies. So she cannot be next. So instead, the second girl will be the one who takes all the heart-shaped cookies. She takes six, and that leaves us with three cookies. And they're all circles, which also gives us our answer, which is E.
