Question 19. Zoe built a pyramid using black and gray cubes. She arranged each cube so that each face does not touch the face of another cube with the same color. One of the black cubes is shown in the figure. What does Zoe's pyramid look like from above? Let's start off by taking a look at Zoe's pyramid. We have one block that we know is black. We know that when two blocks share a face, they are of different colors. So, the blocks next to the black block will be gray, and then the blocks that are next to the gray blocks will be black. We can draw this out as such. We have one of the levels drawn out, with black, gray, and black. I've labeled a couple of the blocks X, Y, and Z. If we take a look at the Y block, we have to know that there is a block underneath the Y block that is next to the black block we already know of. So, the block that is next to the black block will be gray, and that will mean Y is also black, as the one that we know of. If we continue this on, we see that the same pattern holds for X and Z, and this can be repeated for the other blocks. This will look like such, and with this we will have our solution. If we simply imagine rotating this pyramid and facing ourselves, then we will get our answer, which will be D.
