Question 18. A rabbit, a beaver, and a kangaroo are having a competition. The beaver moves one space at a time, the rabbit moves two spaces at a time, and the kangaroo moves three spaces at a time. They all start from the point marked start. The winner is the animal who lands exactly on the point marked finish in the smallest number of complete moves. Who wins the competition? Start off by drawing our racetrack, marking R for rabbit, B for beaver, and K for kangaroo. After all of their first moves, it will look like so. Beaver has moved one space, rabbit has moved two spaces, and kangaroo has moved three spaces. As they continue doing this along the track, we notice that kangaroo has skipped over the finish. And, right after, so does the rabbit. As they keep going, the kangaroo makes a lap and catches up to the beaver. And in this final move, we get kangaroo and beaver at the finish line at the same time. So the answer will be E, the kangaroo and the beaver.
Video Summary
In the competition, the beaver, rabbit, and kangaroo move one, two, and three spaces per move, respectively. The goal is to land exactly on the finish line in the fewest moves. As the race progresses, the kangaroo and rabbit both skip over the finish line on their initial attempts. Eventually, the kangaroo completes a lap and reaches the finish line alongside the beaver, who moves steadily one space at a time. Both the kangaroo and the beaver land on the finish line simultaneously, making them joint winners of the competition.
