Number 23, Joanna divides the figure shown into five equally shaped parts, each consisting of three squares. The square containing which letter is in the same part as the square marked with the star? Pause if you want to try and solve it. Okay, so there's two ways we can make these equally shaped parts that are made up of three squares. We could either have something that looks like a rectangle, right, made up of three squares. Or we could have this sort of L-shaped tile made up of three squares. So remember, all of them are the same, so we either have to use only these rectangle ones or only the L-shaped ones. So let's try, let's start by trying to use the rectangle ones. Well, the only way to cover this square over here, this corner square, is if we have a rectangle that goes like this, right? And then now the only way to get this corner square over here is to use a rectangle that goes over here. And then the only way to get this rectangle is to use a rectangle that goes like this, and now we've run into an issue. We have no way of covering this corner square over here, right? The one way we could think of is to put a rectangle over here, but then it's covering this square over here, which there's no actual tile there, right? The figure is not there, it doesn't extend that far. So we can't actually cover this corner tile over here now. So it's actually impossible to cover this figure or tile this figure using these rectangular shapes. So let's try the L shapes now. Let me erase this. So once again, the only way to get this corner square over here is to put a tile over here. And then from here, you might want to do some trial and error. But if you work on it for a little bit, what you'll find is that you can tile it or cover these squares like this. If we put a L-shaped tile over here, we put another L-shaped tile over here. We put one more L-shaped tile over here. And then last we can see in the middle we have an L-shaped tile that goes right here. And so that means that the middle tile that contains the star also contains the letter E, so the correct answer is option E.
Video Summary
Joanna divides a figure into five identically shaped parts, each consisting of three squares. The goal is to determine which letter’s square shares a part with the star-marked square. Attempts to use rectangular parts were unsuccessful, as they couldn’t cover all necessary areas. By trial and error with L-shaped tiles, all squares were covered. The middle tile containing the L-shape, covering the star, also contained the letter E. Therefore, the square containing the letter E is in the same part as the square marked with the star, making option E the correct answer.
