Question 19. A box of fruit contains twice as many apples as pears. Christy and Lily divided them up so that Christy had twice as many pieces of fruit as Lily. Which of the following statements is always true? Now let's say hypothetically we had 20 apples and 10 pears. This satisfies the fact that the box of fruit contains twice as many apples as pears. We have a total of 30 fruit. Now we have to divide them between Christy and Lily. Since we know that Christy has twice as many pieces of fruit as Lily, we can start off simply by saying Christy has 20 apples and Lily has 10 pears. Now there are a number of ways to do this differently. We could for example have Christy give Lily one of her apples and Lily give Christy one of her pears. That way Christy has 19 apples, one pear, and Lily has nine pears and one apple. Now Christy could give Lily another apple and then we would have Christy having 18 apples, two pears, and then Lily having eight pears and two apples. This still satisfies the need for Christy having twice as many pieces of fruit. We notice that Christy can keep giving Lily pears as long as Lily keeps giving Christy apples in the same amount. So this means we get our solution E. Christy takes as many pears as Lily gets apples.
