Question 6. A carpenter wants to tile a floor of dimensions 4 by 6 using identical tiles. No overlaps or gaps are allowed. Which of the following tiles could not be used? Let's start off by drawing our 4 by 6 floor. And we can start off with answer A, the 2 by 2 tiles. We can draw them in using grey and red, and draw them in like so. We see that the carpenter will be able to fit all the tiles in this way, so the answer cannot be A. Next, let's try option B, these L-shaped tiles. We see that they can fit like so, so this will not be the answer either. Next, if we try these small tiles, they will fit like so, this will not be the answer. And finally, since this is a 4 by 6 floor, and option E has 1 by 4 tiles, we can fit them like so, so that will not be the answer either. So our answer will be D, this tile cannot be used.
Video Summary
A carpenter wants to tile a 4 by 6 floor using identical tiles without overlaps or gaps. The tiles considered were 2x2, L-shaped, small tiles, and 1x4. All options except for one fit perfectly on the floor. After attempting to fit each type of tile, it is concluded that option D cannot be used to tile the floor.
