Now he wants to write the number 2023 as a sum of numbers using only the digit 7, using a 7 a total of 19 times. How many times will he use the number 77?  Let's start off by writing a grid, with the sum being 2023. The only way in the ones digit to get a 3 using the number 7 is to multiply it 9 times, giving us 63.  So we will move over the 6 to the tens place, and we'll get 3 as the total on the bottom.  Next, to get 2 as the sum in the tens place, we have to write out 7 8 times, adding the 6. This will carry over a 1 and a 5 in the hundreds place.  To finish this off, we have to add in 2 more 7s, giving us our final answer. Now, we make sure that we have 19 7s, and we count up the number of times that we use 77.  So with this, we will get our answer, which is E, 6.
