Question 3. Some shapes are drawn on a piece of paper. The teacher folded the left-hand side of the paper over the thick line. How many of the shapes on the left-hand side will fit exactly on top of a shape on the right-hand side? Let's take a closer look at the paper with the shapes on it. When we are seeing if the shapes will fit after being flipped, there are two things to keep in mind. One, that they are equally distanced away from the center fold or the thick line, and two, that they are flipped along their axis. The first shape, we can start off from the top and work our way down. The arrow is two spaces away from the center. On the right-hand side, this arrow is also two away from the center, and they are clearly flipped. So that means that is one shape that will fit. Next, we can look at these triangles. Three away from the center on the left side, and three squares away from the center on the right side. And again, these triangles are flipped along their axis, so they will fit. Next, we have some arrows. The first one is one square away from the center, and the one on the right is also one square away. These arrows are symmetrical along this axis, so they will fit together perfectly. Next, we have these circles. This circle is four squares away from the center, and this circle is not four squares away from the center. It's actually three, so that one will not fit. So we can move on. Next, we have a triangle on the right side and left side. They are one square away from the center. However, they are not flipped. Instead, they are just moved over, so they will not fit together when the sheet is folded. So this means we get our answer, 1 plus 1 plus 1, which will give us the solution of C3.
Video Summary
When a piece of paper with shapes is folded over a central thick line, some shapes on the left side align perfectly with shapes on the right side. To fit, they must be equal distances from the center and flipped along their axis. An arrow, two triangles, and an arrow fit perfectly, but a circle and two triangles do not due to distance and orientation issues. Therefore, three shapes fit when the paper is folded: one arrow and two triangles. The solution is C3, which indicates three matching shapes.
