Question 9. There are 5 candidates in the school election. After 90% of the votes had been counted, the preliminary results were as follows. Alex with 14, Bella with 11, Calvin with 10, Diane with 8, and Eddie with 2. How many students still have a chance of winning the election? So first, we need to find out what 100% of the votes would mean. So we take a total of all of the votes we have, 14 plus 11 plus 10 plus 8 plus 2, and get 45. Now we can set up an equation, 45 divided by x equals 90 over 100. Now we can divide 90 over 100 by 2 to get 45 over 50. So we know that x is 50. So this means that we have 45 votes, and that is 90% of the votes counted. So we simply have to do 50, which is 100%, minus 45, and we get 5. There are 5 more votes to be had. We want to know how many students still have a chance of winning. Let's assume the best for each of the students, and give them all 5 votes. If Alex got 5 more votes, they would definitely win, with 19 votes. If Bella got 5 more votes, they would get 11 plus 5, which is 16, which would beat out Alex's votes. They would also win. Now, if Calvin got 5 more votes, they would get 10 plus 5, which is 15, which again would beat out Alex. So Calvin can also win. If Diane got all 5 votes, they would get 13 votes, and Alex would win. So Diane has no chance of winning, and Eddie, with even less votes, does not either. So the only ones who have a chance of winning are Alex, Bella, and Calvin. So the answer is C, 3.
Video Summary
After counting 90% of the votes in a school election, five candidates have the following votes: Alex (14), Bella (11), Calvin (10), Diane (8), and Eddie (2), totaling 45 votes so far. Since 45 votes are 90% of total votes, 100% equals 50 votes, meaning 5 votes remain. By allocating the remaining votes optimally: Alex could reach 19 and win, Bella could reach 16, and Calvin could reach 15, both surpassing Alex. Diane (13) and Eddie (7) cannot win. Therefore, only Alex, Bella, and Calvin still have a chance to win, making it three candidates.
