Question 23. A group of pirates divided 200 gold and 600 silver coins between them. Each officer received 5 gold and 10 silver coins. Each sailor received 3 gold and 8 silver coins. Each cabin boy received 1 gold and 6 silver coins. How many pirates are there in the group? Take a look. An officer gets 5 gold and 10 silver, a sailor 3 gold and 8 silver, and a cabin boy 1 gold and 6 silver. We notice that each pirate got 5 more silver than gold. Next, we can take 600 silver coins, subtract 200 gold, and we notice that there was 400 more silver than gold. All we simply have to do next is take 400, divide by 5, and this will give us our answer. And, with this, we know how many pirates there are in the group. The answer is D, 80.
Video Summary
A group of pirates divided 200 gold and 600 silver coins among officers, sailors, and cabin boys. Each officer received 5 gold and 10 silver coins, each sailor 3 gold and 8 silver coins, and each cabin boy 1 gold and 6 silver coins. Noticing that each pirate received 5 more silver than gold, we find 400 more silver coins than gold overall, calculated by subtracting gold from silver (600 - 200 = 400). Dividing the difference (400) by 5 gives the number of pirates as 80. Thus, the total number of pirates is D, 80.
