The ages of a family of 5 add to 80. The two youngest are 6 and 8. What was the sum of the ages of the family 7 years ago? Let's go back 7 years in time. 7 years ago, the youngest one had not yet been born, and the second youngest was exactly 1 years old. Then, each of the 4 oldest children would contribute 7 less to the total sum of their ages. So, each of the 4 oldest would cause a subtraction of 7 to the total sum of their ages, and therefore we find 80 minus 28 equals 52. 7 years ago, the youngest had not yet been born, and because it's currently 6 years old, then we have to subtract 6 from the total sum of their ages, and we find 52 minus 6 equals 46, which gives the correct answer of D.
