Video Summary
Question 3. Ines had 19 plums. During dinner, each of the 5 people in her family ate either 3 or 4 plums. How many people ate 4 plums? 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. First, let's consider the case where everyone eats 4 plums and see how close to the actual situation we get. So if all 5 people in her family eat 4 plums, then the total number of plums that get eaten is 4 times 5, or 20. This is not 19, as is actually the case. However, it is very close. Only 1 plum too many is being eaten. We can fix the situation by considering the case where 1 person ate 1 less plum. So this means that the total number of plums eaten would be 20 minus that 1 less plum, or 19, just as we were expecting. And so out of the 5 people, all of them are still eating 4 plums, except for the 1 person who is now eating 3 plums. And so 5 minus 1 is 4, and the answer is D.
