Video Summary
The webinar introduced making a table as a problem-solving strategy, especially when information has multiple characteristics, when solving logic problems, or when tracking changes over time. Tables can reveal missing information, help identify patterns, and prevent choices from being skipped or counted twice. They need only be clear and usable, not perfectly drawn. The instructors demonstrated the strategy with several Math Kangaroo problems: tracking berries that doubled each day, comparing digit products and sums, finding the values of colored target zones, and organizing animal counts and leg totals. They also worked through trickier problems involving a snail climbing out of a well, a rabbit’s weekly food choices, and a kangaroo’s seasonal weight changes. A final challenge used divisibility to determine how many cookies each baker made on Friday. Students were encouraged to try problems in the polls and chat, ask for hints, and check their reasoning carefully—particularly in “gotcha” questions where timing or wording matters. The instructors emphasized that tables are one tool among many: students should practice using them and decide when they are helpful. Past contests and the Math Kangaroo website’s video solutions were recommended for further practice.
