Video Summary
Dr. Sarah Sagee’s fifth fall webinar for Math Kangaroo Levels 3–4 focused on finding patterns and solving complex problems by first examining simpler cases. Students could participate through polls and chat while the instructor and teaching assistant explained each problem.

The lesson showed how patterns can reveal efficient ways to count or calculate. Examples included finding the number of clothespins needed for towels and fence posts needed for a longer fence, with attention to the difference between endpoints and the gaps between them. Students also worked with a repeating color sequence, a multiplication diagram with symmetry, and a chart of consecutive integers. Other activities involved matching numbered tokens around a crown, reflecting digits in a mirror, and extending a pattern of card-built houses.

The webinar concluded with an arithmetic sequence, 3, 7, 11, 15, … . Its common difference is 4. To find a later term without listing every number, students counted the gaps: the 10th term is 3 + 9 × 4 = 39, and the 20th is 3 + 19 × 4 = 79.

The instructor emphasized drawing as a useful starting point, checking answer choices carefully, and using patterns to predict what comes next. These strategies can help solve a variety of Math Kangaroo contest problems.
