Video Summary
The fourth Level 5–6 webinar focused on ratios and proportions. The instructors encouraged students to read problems carefully, note what is known and what must be found, write equations or diagrams, show their work, and check calculations. They reviewed basic conversions, such as 60 minutes per hour and 100 centimeters per meter.

A ratio compares two quantities and can be written as a fraction or with a colon; simplifying it helps present answers clearly. A proportion states that two ratios are equal. Students practiced setting up proportions and using cross-multiplication as a useful shortcut, while learning that its formal basis is multiplying both sides of an equation by the same value.

Problems applied these ideas to speed, comparing cats and dogs through paws and noses, areas in diagrams, map scales, relative weights, rectangle dimensions, and earnings. The instructors also demonstrated dimensional analysis and using variables to express related quantities. A bonus problem showed that increasing one rectangle dimension by 10% while decreasing the other by 10% reduces the area by 1%.

The webinar emphasized that ratio problems may compare part to part or part to whole, and that drawing a picture, checking whether an answer is reasonable, and making an educated guess can help. Students were encouraged to practice with past contest problems and recorded video solutions.
