This Math Kangaroo Webinar is distinct from the Competition held in March.

In this webinar a Math Kangaroo instructor incorporates engagement triggers through Polls to have students participate in an activity. There are no student-teacher discussions as it happens in a regular small group class.

Webinar Presenter: Mahmut Secilmis
Mahmut Secilmis has been a dedicated mathematics educator for sixteen years, specializing in a wide range of mathematical disciplines. His experience encompasses teaching and tutoring at various levels, including Elementary Math, Middle School Math, ACT Math, SAT Math, TSI Math, STAAR Math, Common Core, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Precalculus, AMC, Gifted and Talented programs, CogAT, and STEM subjects. In addition to his teaching roles, Mr. Secilmis has actively participated in coaching various math competitions such as Math Kangaroo, MathCounts, Math Madness, MathCON, and Math is Cool, as well as chess tournaments. He holds certifications in Math (Grades 6-12) and Gifted and Talented Education (K-12). Currently, he is pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership, where his innovative teaching techniques are designed to help students grasp complex mathematical concepts thoroughly. His development of spiral assessments has been particularly impactful, earning him third place in the district for increasing student success on NWEA tests in 2020. This same approach also led to a fourth-place district ranking in 2021 for improving student outcomes on state tests. Mr. Secilmis has also demonstrated success in preparing students for competitive events. Notably, one of his students achieved first place in the state MathCON competition, qualified for the national level, and secured 34th place nationally.

Webinar Contributor: Soham Dam
Soham Dam is a High School Junior from Pittsburgh, PA. He has competed in Math Kangaroo since first grade, collecting several state and national awards. He also competes in many other math competitions and earned several accolades, most notably an honorable mention in the 2023 USA Junior Math Olympiad and placement in the top 40 individuals at ARML 2024. Aside from math, he is an avid piano player and also explores maps in his free time.

Webinar Information:

Students in grades 7-8 with math competition experience or who are interested in competing at a high level in Math Kangaroo are invited to join the Investigating Course.
This course draws on problems from the Level 7-8 competitions, and assumes students have familiarity with problem solving strategies.
In this course, students will work with rational numbers, algebra, multiples/factors, 2D and 3D Geometry, spatial and logical reasoning, combinatorics, clocks, calendars, and percentages.
This course is intense but fun at the same time.
For added challenge, the optional homework for weeks 2-9 will be an entire Math Kangaroo exam to build the students’ persistence and stamina for the actual competition.
This webinar is planned to meet 10 times for 1 hour each.
The number of participants is limited to 300 students.
