Exploring Math Kangaroo Webinar

Recommended for students aged 6-8 years or in Grades 1 or 2

This webinar is distinct from the Math Kangaroo Competition held in March.

Key Details:

  • Registration Deadline: Best to register before October 1 to participate live in all webinar sessions.
  • The webinar is scheduled to meet 10 times for 1 hour each session.
  • Webinar Dates:
    10 Sundays – Oct. 6, Oct. 13, Oct. 20, Oct. 27, Nov. 3, Nov. 10, Nov. 17, Dec. 1, Dec. 8, Dec. 15
  • Webinar Time: 3:15 p.m. EST (LIVE) or watch the recording at any time later.
  • Participation is limited to 300 students.
  • Handouts: Please print them before each class. Access the handouts here


Webinar Format:

  • The instructor will incorporate Polls to engage students in activities.
  • No direct student-teacher discussions as found in regular small group classes.


Presenters & Contributors:

 Webinar Presenter: Lucia Liu

Lucia Liu is an accomplished educator with over a decade of experience in mathematics, holding a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration. As one of the faculty members who helped develop the Math Kangaroo curriculum, Lucia has been instrumental in shaping its educational approach. Since Math Kangaroo launched its online courses, she has taught a variety of group classes, private students, and webinars. Lucia views mathematics as the foundation of all academic subjects and is dedicated to imparting this perspective to her students through her passionate, supportive, and motivational teaching style.

Elita You is a High School Senior from Ann Arbor, Michigan. She has competed in Math Kangaroo since first grade, earning several state and national awards. She was the Assistant Coach of a middle school Mathcounts club as well as the Teacher’s Assistant for the math club at her local Chinese school. Her favorite branches of math are geometry and combinatorics.  


Webinar Overview:

  • Designed for Grades 1-2 students with limited or no math competition experience.
  • Students will be introduced to 2D and 3D visualization and the following problem-solving strategies:
    • Draw a Picture
    • Find a Pattern
    • Make an Organized List
    • Build a Table
    • Work Backwards
    • Guess and Check
  • The course culminates in working through the 2012 Level 1-2 Math Kangaroo contest as a group.
  • Optional Homework: For weeks 2-9, students can tackle an entire Math Kangaroo exam to build persistence and stamina for the actual competition.
