Investigating Math Kangaroo is recommended for students 12-13-14 years old or in grades: 7 or 8. 

This Math Kangaroo Webinar is distinct from the Competition held in March.

Best to register before October 1 to participate live in all webinar sessions.

Level 7-8 


In this webinar a Math Kangaroo instructor incorporates engagement triggers through Polls to have students participate in an activity. There are no student-teacher discussions as it happens in a regular small group class.  

Webinar Presenter: Mahmut Secilmis
Mahmut Secilmis is an experienced mathematics educator with sixteen years of teaching and tutoring across various disciplines, including Elementary Math, Middle School Math, ACT Math, SAT Math, Algebra, Geometry, and STEM subjects. He coaches students in math competitions such as Math Kangaroo and MathCounts and holds certifications in Math (Grades 6-12) and Gifted and Talented Education (K-12). Currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership, Mr. Secilmis focuses on innovative teaching techniques, including spiral assessments that have improved student success. His efforts earned him third place in the district for NWEA test performance in 2020 and fourth place for state test outcomes in 2021. Notably, one of his students won first place in the state MathCON competition and ranked 34th nationally.

Webinar Contributor: Samhitha Kamatala

Samhitha Kamatala is a high school junior from Naperville, IL. A longtime math competitor, she has earned multiple national awards in Math Kangaroo since first grade and tutors students at the Russian School of Mathematics. Beyond academics, she is a dedicated oboist who has performed at Carnegie Hall and serves as a principal oboist in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.

 

Webinar Information:

  • Students in grades 7-8 with math competition experience or who are interested in competing at a high level in Math Kangaroo are invited to join the Investigating Course.
  • This course draws on problems from the Level 7-8 competitions, and assumes students have familiarity with problem solving strategies.
  • In this course, students will work with rational numbers, algebra, multiples/factors, 2D and 3D Geometry, spatial and logical reasoning, combinatorics, clocks, calendars, and percentages.
  • This course is intense but fun at the same time.
  • For added challenge, the optional homework for weeks 2-9 will be an entire Math Kangaroo exam to build the students’ persistence and stamina for the actual competition.
  • This webinar is planned to meet 10 times for 1 hour each.    
  • The number of participants is limited to 300 students.
